Art in Fortune, Fortune in Art

What does the future hold for you? Who knows. But artist and writer Bryant Rousseau will hazard a guess: He will write a short story-esque prediction of what the days ahead might hold in store for you. See two samples below.

  • Each signed fortune, from 100 to 400 words or more, is a one-of-a-kind original (all are guaranteed to be substantially different from each other). Each fortune comes displayed within 6”x9” museum-quality mat.
  • One fortune is $10. Two or more are $8.50 each.
  • You may include any personal information you wish in the “Comments” section of the order form (but this is NOT required).
  • All fortunes are for art/entertainment purposes only!

Fortune: Sample_001

You hit upon a brilliant business idea: Everyone wants to keep a diary—but who has the time?! You start small: badgering friends to let you follow them around from the time they awake until they go to bed, shadowing their every move. While they sleep, you record the minutia of the day just spent, sometimes writing dozens of pages in your enthusiasm for noting not only what they ordered for lunch, but also the serial numbers of the bills used to pay for it. You don’t charge your friends for the service, but they tell others about how much they cherish these records of their days. Soon, you are creating diaries for strangers, getting $100/day, then $200. You hire your first assistant. Then, the patent on the process comes through. Wealth and renown accrue. When you die, the New York Times notes your passing; the obituary’s headline dubs you the “Diary Genius.”

Fortune: Sample_002

On or about September 30, 2004, you will develop an insatiable obsession with collecting rotary phones. Within months, you will own hundreds of them and will no longer be able to do any cooking at home—as your kitchen will serve as your primary storage area for your collection. By early 2005, you will become convinced that the phones are not only beautiful, but also vastly superior as communication devices to cell phones and push-button phones. You begin incessantly lobbying Congress to mandate use of rotary phones in all government offices, but your campaign is a lost cause. However, you succeed in one quest: Bernalillo County, New Mexico declares August 12 “Rotary Phone Appreciation Day” thanks to your efforts. To pay for your all-consuming hobby, you enter rotary phone dialing contests and soon emerge as a world-class competitor, completing most ten-digit calls in less than seven seconds. Your love life, however, devolves into shambles: Unable to check your messages from the road, you rarely return calls and your lover dumps you.
